Steven Moffat of Doctor Who made it clear at a press conference held on the 21st March 2012 that Coleman will be replacing Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left. Moffat chose her for the role because she is the most efficient when working with Smith and spoke more quickly than him.
